Mr. Fredy Romero was born in Bogota, Colombia (South America). He has been a Spanish and EL teacher at middle school, high school, and college levels since 1996. He founded a private school in Colombia where he also served as headmaster. He holds a bachelor’s degree in ESL and Spanish, as well as a master’s degree in School Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University (2010).

Mr. Romero has worked at CMS as an educator since 2002 through international education programs. He has received several awards for his performance in Colombia, as well as in the city of Charlotte. He was nominated for the Albemarle Road Middle School Teacher of the Year award for the 2009-2010 school year.

During his time as a teacher, Mr. Romero has worked in various leadership teams of each school, has collaborated with administrators and teaching staff, has helped families who do not speak English and who do not yet manage the local culture by translating the activities into those that the parents could not participate and collaborated with translation in school conferences, all with the objective of eliminating the enormous barriers of communication between the school and the communities in which he works.

Mr. Romero is currently in Charlotte working as an EL teacher and co-chairs the Education Committee of the Latin American Leadership group created in August 2017, which seeks to identify and propose solutions to problems that affect access to services and opportunities for the Spanish-speaking community that attends Mecklenburg County public schools.

He also collaborates with other nonprofit organizations, the Court and the District Attorney’s office in Mecklenburg County, among others, with the design, implementation and evaluation of various social and legal programs that eliminate criminal records free of charge to the residents of Charlotte so they can get a job, improve their housing options, get access to education, and therefore reduce local poverty rates in the short, medium and long term.

Mr. Romero oversees the continuity of operations and international cooperation agreements between the United States and Colombia, where we have the first branch of this foundation in Latin America.
